ZDF is the second public channel for Germany and was launched live on 1 April 1963. It was established by ARD and Deutschlandradio. It started the test transmission for color broadcast 3 July 1967 which became regularly on the 25th of August 1967. Since its a public service, commercials are shown only during the week until 8pm and not longer than 20 minutes daily. The broadcast format changed to 16:9 in 2006. It also features a HD version since 12 February 2010. It is widely available terrestrial in Germany. The broadcast was extended to cover Europe via satellite signal one 27 August 1993.
