SWR was originally launched live as Südwest 3 on 5 April 1969, as a public channel. The name was changed to Südwest in 1998 and into Südwest Fernsehen in 2000. The channel was re-branded and changed its broadcast format into 16:9 on 11 September 2006, being also renamed as SWR.
