Deutsche Welle TV went live as RIAS-TV in August 1988 although DW as a company was established on 3 May 1953. The initial broadcast was from West Berlin, the name of the channel standing for Radio in the American Sector. The station was shut down due to the fall of the Berlin Wall but resumed on 1 April 1992 as DW started the operation of the RIAS facilities. The chasnnel is aimed as the international service of Germany and is today available in many languages, such as German, English, Spanish since 1995 and Ukrainian since 2000. Some of the content is sourced by public German channels while the rest consists of own productions. The target audience is the overseas market, the channel being widely available via satellite signal. The programming grid is entirely dedicated to news and informational programs.
