BR-alpha went live on 7 January 1998, founded by Werner Reuß. The channel is owned and managed by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) and the broadcast is entirely dedicated to education and culture. It schedules own productions as well as some form ARD and ORF. Mainly you can watch language courses, university and science programs, music, literature, philosophy as well as live jazz concerts. For a better viewing experience the channel features for some of the programs surround 5.1 audio.
