Arte went on air on 30 May 1992. The name stands for Association Relative a la Television Europeenne, a television network founded by the German ARTE Deutschland GmbH and the French Arte France. The broadcasts are entirely dedicated to education and culture. The programs feature subtitle or are dubbed in order to cover both languages. It is available digital terrestrial free to air in both countries as well as on most cable networks and via satellite dish. Arte reaches a market share of around 1% in Germany and a much larger 5% in France. Many programs are broadcasted on other channel in other countries like Canada, Austria, Belgium and Israel.
