Kanal 5 started its live broadcast on 4 April 2004. Like its sister channel Kanal 4, it is owned and operated by the German media conglomerate ProSiebenSat.1 Media. It is the succesor of TV Danmark 1. The channel is available by subscription only. It reaches a market share of 2.9% (as 2008) and the HD version is also available since 1 January 2008.
